Cooper Creek Methodist Church, located at 5209 Mingo Road in Denton, was organized in 1878 in the Cooper Creek community. Although it is now within the city limits of Denton, prior to the area’s incorporation it was 3 ½ miles northeast of Denton at the intersection of Mingo (Highway 24) and Cooper Creek roads.
The Methodist church was founded by families who had settled in the area prior to the Civil War. Worship was originally held in the nearby Cooper Creek School. The land where the Church now stands was purchased in 1901 and is part of the Thos. Toby survey from August 11, 1860. The original building was erected in 1946-1947 by members of the congregation and was known as the First Methodist Church. The church was destroyed due to an arson on October 7, 1968. The sanctuary was restored and an addition was built, which was dedicated on June 8th, 1969.
The church’s congregation spans multiple generations dating back to its building and before. In addition to the interconnecting history of the Methodist church, Baptist church, School, and Cemetery, members of Cooper Creek Methodist were also tied to significant parts of the city and county’s histories. The church continues to hold worship services and be active in the community.
